When the Victorian Parish Church of St. Peter was constructed in Bolton, evidence of a Saxon settlement was unearthed in the shape of religeous artifacts. The church was built in the gothic revival style between 1866 and 1871 out of Longridge stone.
The church in Bolton was given to Gilbertine, canon of Mattersey Priory, by the lord of the manor.
St Mary's Church and Holy Trinity Church are now two of over 700 listed buildings in Bolton.
Canon James Slade founded the Bolton Church Institute in 1855, which subsequently became Slade School.
The first mosque built in Bolton was The New Zakaria Mosque.
St. Barnabus church was converted to a Hindu temple in the 1960s.
