Ormskirk's name is derived from the Old Norse words of Ormr (a person's name meaning 'dragon' or 'serpent') and the word for 'church', which is 'kirk'. Some believe that Ormr may have been a Viking who converted to Christianity and founded a church.
The lord of Lathom granted the church of Ormskirk to Burscough Priory in the late twelfth century.
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is thought to stand on the original site of the 'kirk' and parts of the church date back to Norman times.
