Wigan harks back to the Roman and Celtic periods, making it Lancashire's oldest town.
All Saints church in Wigan is one of Lancashire's oldest parish churches, possibly being established as early as the eleventh century.
The town was a major industrial base for coal and cotton in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is reported that the first coalmine was dug in the mid fiftennth century and at one time there were over 1000 mines within 5 miles of Wigan.
Wigan Pier (on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal) is a major tourist attraction with a heritage and leisure centre displaying a Trencherfield Mill Engine - the largest working mill engine in the world.
