Heywood's name is thought to have derived from 'haga', the Old English word for hedge or animal-enclosure. The hamlet in the 12th century is recorded as belonging to the township of 'Heap'.
Heywood has the nickname of 'Monkey Town'. It is not clear how this legend arose, though it could have been from the local pronunciation of 'Heap Bridge', which was the term for the local area.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Heywood wasinvolved in the textile and coal mining industries.
