Accrington is situated on the River Hyndburn (now mostly underground) and on the 'King's Highway', which was a royal route to hunting grounds in nearby Blackburn.
During the Industrial Revolution, Accrington was heavily involved in the cotton industry.
Accrington also produced bricks, which were known for their hardness.
