The name Preston is derived from 'priest's tun', tun being Saxon for estate or farm.
The sixteenth century Catholic priest and martyr, John Wall, was from Preston.
Celia Fiennes - the seventeenth century travel writer - described the church at Preston as 'pretty', as well as commenting on the range of goods available on the market day.
The mid nineteenth century saw much development in Preston, including a new church (St. John's), a cattle maket and town hall.
